From 1850s Origins to a Modern Family Home – Full Demolition & Rebuild

At Sammon Builders, some projects represent more than construction — they represent continuity, respect, and renewal.

This home began life in the mid-1850s, evolving over generations with additions in the 1960s and 1970s. While full of history and family memories, the structure had reached a point where upgrading the existing fabric would not deliver the comfort, efficiency, or layout required for modern family living. After careful planning and consultation, the decision was made to undertake a full demolition and rebuild — creating a new home on the original footprint that honours the past while embracing the future.

The Original Structure & Strip-Out Phase

The early photographs show the house during structural strip-out, with openings formed and fabric exposed. Decades of layered construction were carefully assessed before demolition progressed.

Key challenges included:

  • Mixed construction methods spanning over 150 years

  • Outdated insulation and services

  • Poor thermal performance

  • Structural limitations within earlier additions

A phased demolition ensured the site was cleared safely and responsibly, preparing for a fresh start while respecting the legacy of the property.

Rebuilding from the Ground Up

As seen in the mid-stage images, the project moved into full reconstruction — blockwork, roofing, structural openings, and the formation of new internal spaces.

This new build incorporated:

  • High-performance insulation throughout

  • Modern airtightness detailing

  • Efficient glazing systems

  • Improved structural layout

  • Contemporary internal flow

The internal stair detail captured in the build phase reflects the level of finish and precision carried throughout the project.

A Contemporary home rooted in it's setting

The completed images show a transformed property:

  • A refined exterior with natural stone feature walls

  • Large glazing panels maximising natural light

  • A modern entrance composition

  • Clean rooflines and improved proportions

  • Carefully designed landscaping and driveway layout

The new home sits confidently within its site — recognisable in form, but entirely reimagined in performance and functionality.

The Result: Built for the Next Generation

This redevelopment achieved:

  • Dramatically improved energy efficiency

  • Reduced long-term maintenance

  • Bright, open internal living spaces

  • Modern comfort standards

  • A future-proofed family home

Most importantly, it allowed the family to remain in their home — preserving their connection to place while upgrading their quality of living.
